Simulating clouds with ICON-LEM around the globe - from the Arctic, across Germany to South America

Tuesday, 08 November 2022, 15:45-16:45
CS, Geb. 30.22, Otto-Lehmann-Hörsaal und online

The Large-Eddy-Model version of ICON allows simulations at resolutions of hectometer scale while including topography, heterogeneous surface and lateral boundary conditions. By this we are able to enter the cloud-resolving range and perform simulations which are getting close to observed time-scales and resolutions. We performed simulations around several observational sites in order to challenge the model based on remote sensing observations of clouds. I will show results from different places and evaluations, to also advertise the potential to use these simulations as a virtual lab in order to evaluate and improve existing parameterizations. The focus will be on our semi-operational every-day simulations at Ny-Aalesund (Svalbard) and JOYCE (Jülich, Germany), providing a dataset of several months by now.
