How much can we limit the rising of the seas? Using emulation to predict the future of glaciers and ice sheets

Tuesday, 07 March 2023, 15:00-16:00
online

Eighty-four scientists from fifteen countries. Twenty-one regions of the world with glaciers or ice sheets. Thousands of computer simulations. How was all this put together to predict the land ice contribution to sea level rise this century for the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report? I will describe using statistical “emulation” to synthesise projections from several international teams in the most comprehensive effort yet to predict 21st century sea level rise.

Bio: Dr Tamsin Edwards is a climate scientist specialising in quantifying the uncertainties of climate model predictions, particularly for the ice sheet and glacier contributions to sea level rise. She was a Lead Author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) www.ipcc.ch%2Freport%2Fsixth-assessment-report-working-group-i%2F&;data=05%7C01%7CC.McLoughlin%40leeds.ac.uk%7C9f907af9639c4280c51308db18e0242d%7Cbdeaeda8c81d45ce863e5232a535b7cb%7C1%7C0%7C638131123180742242%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=JGd70gQP%2BLDG8NA24AEOleNuLDH%2Bf98pQj0AoZPC5Ks%3D&reserved=0">Sixth Assessment Report published in 2021. Tamsin regularly provides expert advice on climate science to the public, policymakers, media and businesses, and is currently the first Parliamentary Thematic Research Lead for Climate & Environment, advising Parliament on research evidence to better inform scrutiny, legislation and debate.
