Depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer has been a major environmental issue of the past few decades. Through controls on long-lived ozone-depleting substances (ODSs) within the Montreal Protocol, the ozone layer is now showing the first signs of recovery, notably in the upper stratosphere and the Antarctic springtime. Despite this obvious and ongoing success, there are a number of challenges to the timely return of ozone to pre-depletion values. These include emissions of uncontrolled, very short-lived substances (VSLS), such as dichloromethane, and the apparent new production of controlled CFC-11. Moreover, observations indicate a decreasing trend in extra-polar lower stratosphere ozone which is not explained by current chemistry.
I will present a range of 3-D model simulations which address the ongoing issues in stratospheric ozone depletion and recovery. In particular, I will show results that quantify the possible impact of new CFC-11 emissions and chlorinated VSLS on ozone recovery. I will also discuss limitations and new developments in modelling of stratospheric chemistry.
