Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research (IMK-AAF) and Institute for Photon Science and Synchrotron Radiation (IPS) invite applications for a PhD Student position (f/m) within a bilateral Austrian - German research project “Ice-nucleation activity of alkali feldspar in aerosol”, a highly interdisciplinary project combining geo-materials science, atmospheric aerosol research and computational physics.

Alkali feldspar - a major rock forming mineral - has been shown to be the most ice-nucleating active mineral aerosol playing an important role in the formation of ice particles in atmospheric clouds, which, in turn, has substantial impact on cloud physical properties and precipitation predictability. The project is targeted at unravelling the physical processes underlying the exceptional ice nucleating activity of alkali feldspar.

The successful PhD candidate will be working on ice nucleation experiments in cold stage optical microscopy, environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) and X‑Ray synchrotron radiation based experimental setups. For details, please see here.
